An urban oasis of flora, fauna, and whimsy, the new Houston offices for international landscape firm SWA transformed the derelict rooftops of the iconic Art Deco building “The Jones on Main” and accompanying floorplate to perfectly suit the relaxed, collaborative, and playful nature of the team.
The design team boldly intervened in the 1927 building, peeling back layers to expose much of the existing structure while minimizing inelegant functional systems. The open ceilings are softly lit with indirect lighting, helping the space to feel tall and open despite low floor to ceiling height and minimal windows.
A custom yet economical approach to furnishing allows for maximized utilization of the space otherwise constrained by the building’s difficult structure. The space features an elongated banquette spanning one entire side of the building, custom work-desks, and unique built-in bookshelves.
The design aspires to showcase SWA’s work and fun approach to collaboration and design. Butterflies, flora, and alligator sculptures are sprinkled throughout the office to inspire exploration, discovery, and joy.
